Toronto Police Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force
Established in 2004, the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force—commonly known as “Toronto Guns and Gangs”—is a specialized division of the Toronto Police Service (TPS). This unit, consisting of designated Guns and Gangs officers, Crown attorneys, and support staff, operates from a confidential location within the Greater Toronto Area. Their primary objective is to identify and dismantle large-scale criminal organizations while reducing gun and gang-related violence.
The unit’s large-scale investigations, often referred to as “projects,” are assigned coded names such as Project Fusion, Project Pathfinder, Project Marvel, Project Traveller, Project XXX, Project Coral, and Project Khiar. These cases typically involve not only Guns and Gangs officers but also various TPS divisions—including Major Crimes, Drug Squad, TAVIS, and ETF—as well as multiple law enforcement agencies such as York Regional Police (YRP), Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Investigative techniques used in project cases often include wiretaps (authorized interception of private communications), surveillance, tracking devices, confidential informants, search warrants, and the acquisition of third-party records. After these extensive investigations, officers from the Guns and Gangs unit, along with members of other TPS divisions, coordinate the simultaneous execution of multiple raids on targeted locations in a highly orchestrated event known as “take-down day.”
